Distribution Employees Organize for Power at Chicago Market
,The hundreds of Teamsters who work Chicago’s International Produce Market grew a little stronger in 2013 after workers at La Hortaliza Produce joined Teamsters Local 703.
La Hortaliza, a new addition to the warehouse and distribution space on the market, granted volunteer recognition to its four delivery drivers who wished to join the Teamsters. Following the quick organizing victory, Local 703 negotiated the new members’ first contract, securing better wages and benefits in line with other Teamster companies currently operating at the market.
“Local 703 is proud to welcome aboard four more hardworking produce haulers with La Hortaliza,” said Sam Scianna, Local 703 Trustee and Business Agent, who assisted Local 703 Trustee, Tony Carioscia, in organizing the company. “As with any unit of members, big or small, the Teamsters will do whatever it takes to protect our brothers and sisters and improve their lives on and off the job.”
Teamsters Local 703 is an affiliate of Teamsters Joint Council 25, America’s premier labor union for Chicago, Illinois and northwest Indiana.
