TEAMSTERS LOCAL 703 NEWS  •  2014

Teamsters Local 703 showed its support Saturday, March 8, 2014, by attending the Second Annual Gala Dinner Dance. A night of dinner, drinks and dancing at Schiller Park’s Victoria Beau Jolie’s Grand Ballroom went toward raising money for the Women’s Committee Scholarship Program, which helps fund scholarships, training opportunities and future member initiatives.

The Gala awarded a total of five $1,000 scholarships to worthy Teamster members who proved how their pursued education will not only empower them as Teamsters, but how that empowerment will also help their fellow Teamsters.

Maggie Jenkins, President of the Women’s Committee and Communications Director of Teamsters Local 727, along with Women’s Committee Secretary-Treasurer Roberta Lester of Local 731, and Recording Secretary Lisa Beecher of Local 142, presented the scholarship winners with certificates before Chicago band Shy Soul began playing and guests took to the dance floor for the rest of the evening.

Meet the 2014 Women’s Committee Scholarship Winners:

Antwonette Lucas, Teamsters Local 777: Lucas is a school bus driver for First Student in South Holland, Illinois, and is getting ready to receive her bachelor’s degree in finance at Roosevelt University.

Mairim Martinez, Teamsters Local 727: Martinez is a senior keeper for the Chicago Zoological Society who works in the Seven Seas department of Brookfield Zoo. She is working toward her Master of Zoology degree from Miami University Ohio.

Jennifer Moore, Teamsters Local 700: Moore is a deputy sheriff at the Cook County Juvenile Court House and is studying Clinical Mental Health at Chicago State University.

Jennifer Obrecht, Teamsters Local 700: Obrecht is a union steward for River Valley Juvenile Detention Center and working toward a Master of Social Work degree from Governors State University.

Annie Ware, Teamsters Local 743: Ware is a senior library specialist at Governors State University, where she is working toward an Educational Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Leadership with a concentration in Social Not-For-Profit Entrepreneurship.

The Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee was founded in 2009. Since then, they have successfully brought together representatives from every Joint Council 25 affiliate to strengthen communication and leadership opportunities for women throughout the union.

Amy Hertz, Local 703’s Women’s Committee Representative since its foundation, says, “It’s a big honor that Tom (Stiede) chose me to represent the women of Local 703. I absolutely enjoy it and learn a lot from the different women who speak at our meetings about their own locals.”

Hertz believes it is important for the Teamsters to have a committee dedicated to women because, as she says, “it gives women knowledge and tells us what we can do, what choices we have and how far we can go. It focuses on our rights and what we can do to better our membership. Through the perspectives of so many different women, it teaches us what we can do to make ourselves better and make ourselves known in the different union industries.”

When asked why furthering education is especially important to the Women’s Committee, Hertz responded, “The scholarship program helps Teamster men and women who want to go back to school. It is also beneficial because it is open – our scholarships have typically been restricted to younger students whose parents are Teamsters. This program is for actual Teamster members who are working and want to better themselves.”

The success of last year’s Inaugural Gala Dinner Dance launched the Women’s Committee Scholarship Program. Hopefully, the money raised from this year’s Gala proves the staying-power of the Women’s Committee and their continued success in empowering Teamsters through education and initiative programs.
